Hands-Free Calling on your Chevrolet
Check out how easy it is to make Hands-Free calling on your new Chevrolet.
Hands-Free Calling is a voice-activated calling system built into your vehicle or your Chevrolet. Just press the Hands-Free Calling button (phone icon button), speak a number or saved name, and you will be connected while you stay focused on the road.
Hands on the wheel, eyes on the road, Hands-Free Calling keeps you connected, even when your cell phone can’t.
It’s built-in and designed for better connections and fewer dropped calls. Even in places where handheld cell phones are banned while driving—OnStar enables you to call hands-free.
You stay focused on driving, because you simply push the Voice Command button to make or take calls. Say the phone number or the stored name for the contact you want to call. Your car has a number that’s easy to share with those who need a reliable way to reach you on the road.

A: When making a hands-free call, Bluetooth for Phone plays an audio prompt alerting you to whether OnStar Hands-Free Calling3 or your Bluetooth phone is being used to make the call. For example, if you make a call using your Bluetooth phone, you hear “Call using Corey’s Phone,” where “Corey’s Phone” is the nametag stored when the phone was paired. If you make a call using OnStar Hands-Free Calling3, you hear “Call using OnStar.”

Q: How does the vehicle determine whether to make an outgoing call using my Bluetooth phone versus Hands-Free Calling3?
A: When a Bluetooth phone is connected to the vehicle, outgoing calls placed using the steering wheel Push To Talk button automatically utilize your Bluetooth phone. Bluetooth for Phone audibly identifies which phone is making the outgoing call by providing the phone nametag stored during the pairing process. If there are no paired Bluetooth phones connected, using the steering wheel Push To Talk button automatically uses OnStar Hands-Free Calling3 to make an outgoing call. Using the phone button on the OnStar 3-button assembly always uses the OnStar Hands-Free Calling3 feature.

Q: How do I answer an incoming call?
A: If you have your Bluetooth phone paired and connected to the vehicle, you should hear a standard ring-tone through your vehicle speakers when you have an incoming call to your Bluetooth phone. To answer the call, use the steering wheel Push To Talk button. The call audio is heard through the vehicle speakers and your voice is picked up through an in-vehicle microphone.
-
Q: How do I make a hands-free Bluetooth call?
A: To make a hands-free call using Bluetooth for Phone, you can use the “Dial,” “Call,” “Digit Dial,” or “Re-Dial” voice commands.
-
Q: Can I still push buttons on my phone to make a call instead of using Bluetooth for Phone’s voice recognition?
A: Yes, but General Motors does not recommend using the buttons on the phone while driving. Bluetooth for Phone allows you to make calls by pushing the steering wheel control and using voice commands to call nametags or dial phone numbers.
-
Q: How can I make it so the other people in the vehicle do not hear my phone call?
A: Bluetooth for Phone allows you to switch to privacy mode so that you can speak privately on your phone. To hear the call audio on your phone instead of through the vehicle speakers, use the “Transfer Call” voice command. See instructions for: Transferring a call.
-
Q: How do I end a Bluetooth call?
A: A Bluetooth call can be ended by using the “End Call” voice command, pressing the “Phone On Hook” button (if vehicle equipped), or letting the other party hang up. When the call is terminated, you should hear “Call Ended” through the vehicle’s speakers, and the audio system should return to the state it was in before the hands-free call.
-
Q: When I’m using my Chevrolet Bluetooth system during a call, the audio quality is sometimes poor. Is that normal?
A: Poor audio quality may be due to a combination of factors including cellular networks, vehicle noise levels, and the Bluetooth-equipped phone’s performance. In order to minimize this, try to reduce the noise in the vehicle as much as possible. This can be done by lowering the HVAC settings, closing windows or sunroofs (if open), and minimizing other noise sources in the vehicle (e.g., other passengers, rough road surfaces). If these recommendations do not resolve the issue, it may help to end the call and place it again to establish a new cellular connection.
-
Q: How do I call numbers stored in my phone’s contact list?
A: If the phone supports access to contacts using voice recognition, then the vehicle’s Voice Pass-Thru feature can be used to call numbers stored in the phone contact list. This feature can be accessed by using the “Voice” command. See instructions for: Using voice pass-thru.
